Non-welding trusses

PRODUCT

What are steel products for construction with non-welding trusses?

Recently, construction sites have seen a gradual increase in large fires caused by welding operations. In response, a method for non-welding truss construction has been developed and has garnered attention. This method has been evaluated to accurately identify the needs of industry, and has been found to comply with government measures and related acts for fire prevention at construction sites. Reports show that most fires and explosions at construction sites occurred during the process of welding and fusing for the past three years. Fire causes not only massive physical and human damages, but also immeasurable damage due to construction delays.

To prevent fire accidents, a fire supervisor is deployed to the following construction sites where the risks of ignition are high: welding and fusing on flammables; flammable gas plumbing and cylinders; and urethane formed insulators, etc. For this reason, cost-reduction effects of fire management are expected. Amidst this environment, Shinsung C&S Co., Ltd. actively explored ways to install trusses at construction sites without welding. The solution is a non-welding system. This system allows for fastening of screws and bolts by using connection device to horizontal and vertical structural steel pipes. Fixed brackets can be inserted and fastened with use of the depressed surface of the central part of a steel section.

The traditional system with welding trusses used ready-made pipes

Used ready-made steel pipe products

Non-welding truss is fabricated as roll-formed truss that can be assembled with bolts, thus ensuring structural safety. Steel materials with structural safety and weather resistance features are formed and fabricated to form a rail groove that can accommodate bolt heads. For this reason, it has higher section modules compared to materials of the same thickness. As galvanized steel or POSMAC steel are used for raw materials, its weather resistance is guaranteed.

02

Reduced construction period

Due to its streamlined process, the non-welding system reduces the construction period by 30% compared to a conventional welding system. It takes 15-20 days for one team (three members) when they work on 1,000㎡ with a non-welding system, while it takes 30 days for one team (five members including a fire supervisor) when working with a welding system on the same area.

03

The same construction and high quality are secured

Quality can vary in a welding system depending on the welder’s level of experience and skill. However, consistent high quality can be secured with a non-welding system regardless of the welder’s proficiency.

04

Non-welding truss construction method

It is a construction method for assembling bolts and brackets without welding, applied to building hardware that is used for remodeling external walls or constructing exterior walls of newly built buildings. The non-welding method can be applied to various interior and exterior building materials such as stone, marble, composite panels, galvanized sheet panels, aluminum sheet panels, and zinc panels, etc.

As welding is skipped, construction period and costs can be saved. It has a feature of eliminating fire risk factors due to screw and bolt assembly. As it can be done by a general assembler, costs can be further reduced. Truss structure refers to a substructure that supports the attachment of exterior finishing materials in construction.

Trusses are manufactured and constructed in two types – welding construction, and non-welding construction. Non-welding construction is technology joining pipes using bolts, nuts, piece and fasteners, etc. As welding is always exposed to the risk of fire, concurrent operations are prohibited within the radius of up, down, left, and right in the surrounding area of welding.

As the number of construction sites emphasizing safety first has increased, construction companies are asking for safer construction processes than the traditional welding system for the same cost. The non-welding truss method using bolts, nuts, and screws allow for safe construction. In addition, its biggest advantage is that construction for various parts can be done simultaneously.

Characteristics
  • Reduced construction time and elimination of fire risk compared to the traditional welding truss construction
  • Using connectors prevents twisting and misalignment of mounting surfaces of trusses (appropriate for seismic design)
  • All the mounting surfaces maintain consistent flatness, allowing for beautiful finishing of exterior walls without curves
Uses
  • Truss structure for constructing finishing material of exterior walls
  • Non-welding truss required for track-welding such as composite panel, stone, ceramic siding, terracotta, etc.,
